-------------------------------------------------------------

For many years we have organised an Annual Study Day to provide an opportunity for delegates to develop a greater understanding of emergency management and learn from the experience of others. This year our theme of "Major Emergencies - Exploring Impact and Community Recovery" will look at issues affecting our communities and how we can engage and work together to mitigate impact. Our speakers will share their experience and knowledge, which we hope you will find informative and useful.·

The day will include presentations by:

Simon Parker, County Emergency Planning Officer, Dorset County Council
MSC Napoli - Impact and Response
In January 2007, the MSC Napoli was stranded off the coast of South Devon after storms. Some containers held potentially hazardous material and a multi-agency management team was set up to monitor and respond to the situation to minimise the impact on the local community. Simon's presentation will highlight the impact upon, experiences of and key lessons learnt from Dorset County Council and other agencies involved in the shore based response.

David Brown LLM, OBE, former Chief Executive of North Cornwall District Council
Boscastle - Community Impact and Recovery
David played a leading role in the response to the Boscastle floods in August 2004. He will share his experiences of the impact on the local community and businesses and the team effort to rebuild the community and return to normality.

Elke Allaert, Psychosocial Manager, Federal Ministry of Public Health, Provinces of East and West Flanders
Psychosocial Care in Emergency Planning

Elke will provide an insight into the Belgian approach to volunteer and community involvement, providing case studies of activation, co-ordination and implementation of psychosocial support activities in emergencies.

Tony Thompson, Head of UK Emergency Response and Resilience, British Red Cross
How to Gain Maximum Benefit from Voluntary Sector Engagement

Tony played a significant role in the British Red Cross and voluntary sector response to the terrorist incident in London on 7 July 2005. He will refer to his experience and explain the valuable support the voluntary sector can provide to enable communities to recover from a crisis.

Chris Samuel, Chair of National Steering Committee for Warning and Informing the Public.
Communicating with the Public - A National Perspective
Chris is the Civil Protection Team Manager for Cheshire County Council and in his capacity as Chair of the National Steering Committee for Warning and Informing the Public he will share with delegates the requirements under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and the national position. He will highlight the importance of this subject area and provide examples of practical application from across the country.
